Will Architects be Human?

2011-7-17 Admin

It's been said that much of what a design professional does today will, in the future, be done instead by computers. Of course, projecting time scenarios on these revolutionary changes varies considerably. Still, there is educated speculation that 90% of what an architect does today will be done by the computers of the future. Technology has eliminated many of the competent processes once performed by analytical human activity. The designer's tools have also evolved. Slide rules and T-Squares were common just a generation ago. Today's tools are both fantastic and feared. Draftspersons have been replaced by CAD operators and, now, these once essential technicians are being replaced by more educated licensed professionals who have integrated the technical skills of CAD with the design professional's sophisticated talent and expertise.

Computers Damage Architects' Design Quality?

2011-7-16 Admin

Yes, as students lose drawing skills and the feel for a building, says Peter Eisenmann; No, look at the concepts they open architects' minds to, says Neil Spiller. 'Yes' Peter Eisenman, Yale professor of architectural design. Architecture today relies on one of passivity's most insidious forms — the computer. Architects used to draw volumes, using shading and selecting a perspective. In learning how to draw, they began to understand what it was like to draw like Palladio or Le Corbusier, and the extent of the differences in these masters' work. Compared to Le Corbusier, a wall section of Palladio felt different to the hand. It is important to understand such differences because they convey ideas. With a computer, one does not have to draw. Clicking a mouse from point to point, one connects dots that make plans and change colours, materials and light. Photoshop is a fantastic tool — for those who do not think.

Think Before You Build

2011-7-15 Admin

Have computers made architects less disciplined? By Witold Rybczynski
We generally assume that technological advances save time, boost efficiency, increase productivity, and so on. Once we get used to the latest conveniences, we can't imagine life without them. I've been writing a book chronicling a building designed and built in the mid 1970s. During one of my interviews, an architect involved in the project reminded me that this was a time before faxes, cell phones, color Xeroxes, personal computers, and Power Point. The cumbersome and slow production of drawings and reports required extensive preparation—hurried changes were difficult if not impossible. Such working methods required what he described as "tremendous discipline and rigor of thought." I remember, as an architecture student in the 1960s, painstakingly inking drawings, stenciling lettering, coloring prints with pastel pencils.

Are you Brit or Yank? Show me your quotationmarks And I’ll tell you which. Carefree," in general, means "free from care or anxiety." (American practice) "Carefree", in general, means "free from care or anxiety".
